Shonna McDaniels and Daphne Burgess are working to embellish Oak Park with a mural that has an empowering message. The mural, which Demetri's "BAMR" Washington painted in 2014, is the first of many the artist has painted in the park, many of them in response to recent events in Oakland. The project came about after Councillor Steve Hansen was called to recommend an artist paint at the Black Lives Matter protests the following day, and Lane Washington asked. Washington was also one of the artists asked to paint "Black Lives Matter" in yellow, as well as the words "Oak Park" and "Lives Matter."

Although the concept of public art often resembles very large installations, these works of art are of modest size. Every September there are small treasures of art hidden in the complex - special installations called crossroads. Three amphibian species have been observed in the Oak Park, and some are breeding there.
